Overview
The project concentrates on redesigning the book cover of The Dallargut Dream Department Store to represent a different and more dream-like experience in the story. The design studies the impact of visual storytelling on a reader’s first impression of a book and how story elements of the narrative get communicated through imagery, lighting, and typography. With Adobe Photoshop, I created the cover using image compositing and digital manipulation. Several visual aspects – photography, lighting effects, textures, typography – have been creatively merged to make it look cinematic and enveloping.
Silent still night street and the glowing butterfly appeared as core visual devices, creating curiosity, wonder, the sensation of entering a dreamlike world. The typography and layout was intentionally created to maintain an easy reading while still remaining visually impactful while helping to set the atmospheric mood for the composition. The combination of photographic images with graphic design components allowed that final cover to depict that magical, mysterious tone with a new sense of storytelling but also to establish a solid foundation for its visual identity for the book itself.
