Overview

This work investigates portrait photography through two disparate styles; a George Hurrell–inspired black-and-white portrait and a contemporary professional business portrait. Drawing upon the high drama of Hurrell’s style of portraiture, bold contrasts and sculpted shadows evoke a cinematic black-and-white quality. The lighting style, inspired by classic Hollywood portrait photography, focuses on depth, texture and expressive features of the face, to achieve solid visual atmosphere. In contrast, the business portrait carries a clean and modern manner of presentation and seems to indicate confidence, professionalism, and approachability. Using soft lighting, a well-balanced composition, and naturalistic emotionality the portrait has polished itself and is suitable for professional profiles. I was responsible for all photography process, from lighting, to portraiture, to composition to post photo and post production. These two approaches allow the project to investigate how lighting and composition and color treatment can convey mood and narrative through portrait photography.
